Quote of the Month

". . . Imagine all the people living life in peace. . . Imagine all the people sharing all the world. . . You may say I'm a dreamer. But I'm not the only one. I hope someday you join us, and the world will live as one."

                           ~ John Lennon

Recipe of the month

Heidi's Healthier Chocolate Chip Cookies
The recipe everyone's been waiting for ~ You won't believe how good they are
[All ingredients can be found in the grocery store or in your local health food store.]

I & 2/3 cups of Spelt Flour (A high protein, high fiber flour)
1/4 cup of Flax Seed Meal
1/4 cup Soy Flour
3/4 tsp Baking Soda

Whisk the above ingredients in a medium size bowl and set aside.

1/2 cup Smart Balance Spread (Non trans-fatty acids, a good alternative
to butter)

2/3 cup Turbinado sugar (This is an unrefined sugar and doesn't create the typical "sugar high's and lows" because it doesn't cause the same rise in insulin as other forms of sugar.)
1 Egg
2 tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
1/2 tsp Pure Almond Extract
1/2 package of Grain Sweetened Chocolate Chips (Made with unrefined sugar)

Preheat oven to 325. Mix the Smart Balance in a mixer until creamy. Add turbinado and mix until fluffy. Add egg and extracts and blend until smooth. Add dry ingredients slowly to wet ingredients and mix only until blended. Add chocolate chips and mix. Spoon onto a cookie sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray. Cook 8-9 minutes and remove from oven. Let stand on cookie sheet for 5 minutes before removing. This allows the moisture to sink back into the cookies and make them chewy.

Asana of the month:

HEAD TO KNEE
FORWARD BEND

Janu Sirsasana

(JAH - new
shear - SHAHS - anna)

Janu = Knee
Sirsa = Head

Benefits:
Calms the brain and helps to relieve mild depression.
Stretches the spine, shoulders, hamstrings and groin.
Stimulates the liver and kidneys.
Improves digestion.
Helps to relieve symptoms of menopause.
Relieves anxiety, fatigue, headache and menstrual discomfort.
Therapeutic for high blood pressure, insomnia and sinus problems.
Strengthens the back muscles during pregnancy (up to 2nd trimester).

How to do this pose:
(Always be sure to check with your Dr before performing this or any other new exercise especially if you have heart problems, low blood pressure or are pregnant)

1. Sit on the floor with the left leg straight out in front of you. Gently press the back of the left knee to the floor and press the sole of that left foot out in front of you. Bend the right knee so that the sole of the right foot is touching the left thigh, or as close as you can. (If your right knee doesn't rest comfortably on the floor you can place a towel under your knee.)

2. Place your hands on either side of the left leg. Inhale and lengthen your torso toward the sky. Exhale and fold your torso over the left thigh as you continue to lengthen the spine. Focus on your breath and with every inhale straighten your spine further and back off of the pose slightly. With every exhale fold forward over that right leg as you aim your lower ribs toward the knee and the top of your head toward your toes. Continue to ground your sitz bones toward the floor and keep all your muscles active.

5. Stay in this pose anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes. Use the breath to facilitate the pose. Be sure to engage the abdominals and slide those shoulders down away from the ears the whole time. To come out of this pose slowly roll up on an inhale. Switch legs and repeat with the right leg.

Something to Think About:

Clearing out the clutter ~ Is your "stuff" keeping you from success and from peace?

After recently moving I am reminded of how much we accumulate over the years. The question is - How much do we really need? I urge each of you to go through your home and clean out the clutter. Even if you just vow each day to eliminate 3 things, no matter how big or small. This will help you to detach from what may be holding you back. It's a good idea to have a friend or family member help you. They have no emotional attachment and can help you to let go. Not only will you have a more streamlined home, you will find peace in eliminating those piles and overstuffed closets. Best of all, you will be giving to those who need these things more than you do. There are many wonderful organizations willing to take your unused items. Some organizations will even pick the items up from your home and your donation is tax deductible. Remember . . . Clutter out equals clutter in. When you are living with clutter in your home, you are living with clutter in your mind. You deserve an organized home and peace of mind. Give yourself that gift.
